St Jean D'Angely - An Ancient Town

The house is just a 10 minute drive from St Jean D'Angely which has a twice weekly market, supermarkets, shops, bars and restaurants.

St Jean D'Angely Street Square with Cafe's  Town Hall

There are many places worth visiting all within easy driving distance of the house.

Cognac is a 30 minute drive away.  This ancient town situated on the Charente river is well worth a visit.  The tour around the home of Hennessy followed by some Cognac tasting is highly recommended.

Saintes and Rochefort are also only about 30 minutes drive away and they too are ancient towns steeped in history.  A little further, about 1 hour, and you are in the sophisticated town of La Rochelle. This is the place to go if you want to browse around some interesting French shops in an attractive town before or after a good lunch.

10 minutes away from La Rochelle is the island of Ile de Re.  Ile de Re has several long beaches and attractive fishing villages.  Take the toll bridge over to the island, stop at one of the island’s beaches and then drive on to the little fishing village of St Martin de Re for an al fresco lunch or supper in its pretty harbour.

The best beaches in the region are about an hour’s drive away in Royan.  The beaches are sandy and on some the water is shallow for quite a distance making it ideal for young children.

Finally, for wine lovers I would recommend a day trip to St Emilion, 1h15 minutes drive away.  The town itself is beautiful and many of the vineyards are open for tours and wine tasting.  There are some fantastic restaurants there too.  I can highly recommend the restaurant "L'Envers du Decor", rue du clocher, followed by some wine tasting (and inevitably some wine buying) at Clos La Madeleine.  The St Emilion Tourist Office provide maps of all the vineyards you can visit.
